Franklin was an 'over indulgent father', who 'had the wool pulled over his eyes'. ![]() However, she later had Cecilia and proved (at least to herself) that she could love and raise a normal child. Eva was a 'cold and detached mother', whose reasons for having a baby in the first place were ambivalent. The main debate was whether Kevin's nature and actions stemmed from 'nature' or from 'nurture' – was he 'born evil', or did his problems result from his upbringing? Several readers were unable to decide which others came down on the side of Nature no one entirely blamed his parents. Those who did, mostly commented on how shocking and also thought-provoking it was. Obviously this was a very disturbing book, so much so that not everyone in the group felt able to read/finish it, very understandably. St Just Monday Morning Reading Group 30h November 2020. ![]()

![]() ![]() Turner is also a craftsman in symbolism of his own tradition as always, his writing is lucid and. ![]() In Revelation and Divination in Ndembu Ritual, he has reprinted, with updated and principally edi- torial changes, two insightful essays on religious practice and belief. He believes that ritual symbols, like botanists' stains, enable us to detect and trace the movement of social processes and relationships that often lie below the level of direct observation. Victor Turner is a master interpreter of symbol and ritual in social life. Striking a personal note in the introductory chapter, Turner acknowledges his indebtedness to Ndembu ritualists for alerting him to the theoretical relevance of symbolic action in understanding human societies. ![]() Written by an internationally-known social scientist, the book demonstrates how the study of small-scale events may reveal as much about what it means to be a human being in society as do grand macrosocial and macrocultural surveys.Drawing on two and a half years of fieldwork, Victor Turner offers two thorough ethnographic studies of Ndembu revelatory ritual and divinatory techniques, with running commentaries on symbolism by a variety of Ndembu informants. The core of this book is a complete description of two important Ndembu rituals of affliction (Chihamba and Kayong'u), and an analysis of the system of ideas underlying more than a dozen modes of divination. ![]() ![]() ![]() He lived a simple life and even now with his sudden rise in fame, his ego hasn’t inflated one bit. At his late eighties, he is very down-to-earth, and has no interest in legacy or fame. ![]() I then started to research more on Saul Leiter and have not only appreciated his images, but his philosophy of life. It was much more romantic, poetic, and full of expression. It was unlike any street photography I had seen before. ![]() When I flipped through the pages, I was overwhelmed by the beautiful colors, reflections, and abstractions of Leiter. When I left Marseille back to America, he gave me a beautiful Saul Leiter book. But upon hearing this, I didn’t dig into it too deeply.Ībout a year ago when I was in Marseille, I re-discovered Saul’s work through a good friend of mine, Yves Vernin. I think I remember seeing some link on the internet about the discovery of one of the earliest “pioneers” in color street photography. I can’t remember the exact moment that I discovered the work of Saul Leiter. ![]() |
